Marc Casto Interviewed on San Francsico's KRON 4

July 5, 2008

"On Saturday, Marc Casto was interviewed by award-winning KRON 4 anchorwoman Ysabel Duron regarding the changing nature of the travel industry.  During the course of the interview Marc advised that for the Summer of 2008 we will be seeing "significant delays, cancellations, and frustrations for travelers" as airlines continue to contend with the affects for expensive fuel.

hdr_branding.jpg

In order to minimize challenges for travelers this summer, Marc advised the following:

1. Arrive early, pack light, and always bring an overnight kit.
San Francisco Bay Area airports now recommend arriving 90 minutes in advance for domestic flights and over 2 hours for international travel.  If you have to check in luggage it is possible that even that may not be enough time.  The number of delays and cancellations are expected to rise significantly this summer so always pack your (small) toiletries in your carry on.

2. Buy your tickets early to lock in fuel costs.
Fuel surcharges will continue to increase through the summer and beyond.  Any tickets purchased now will lock in the cost for the fuel surcharge.

3. Enroll in an Airline's frequent flier program.
Don't enroll for the sake of the points, which are getting more and more worthless, but for the status as members have priority over non-members during flight cancelations or when being stuck on standby.

4. Check in online.
Print your boarding pass before arriving at the airport to avoid some lines.  Likewise, check security wait times and airport delays at www.flightstats.com or www.casto.com before leaving.

5. Consider a registered traveler program.
Cost ranges from $100-$128 per year but applicants have a special security line which significantly reduces time in the airport.  This is a must for all frequent travelers!  Options include Clear (www.flyclear.com) or on the Casto website (http://www.casto.com/services/clear-pre-screened-airport-security.html), FLO (www.flocard.com), and RtGo (www.rtgocard.com)

The Business Travel Beat Profiles Casto Travel

May 28, 2008

Jay Campbell of the Business Travel Beat interviewed Marc Casto business trends, employee incentives, managing company culture, technology, offshore servicing and the "broken" model of supplier and global distribution system revenue streams. The company has 150 U.S. employees. An excerpt of the interview follows.

Campbell: What are your biggest advantages?

Casto: When we are in a competitive bid situation, what stands out for us are commitments to service and the ability to demonstrate it. Any incentive compensation that we have for the corporate agent team is tied to the value we're able to demonstrate in savings for the client. We don't do incentives based on call volumes or transaction volumes or any of these metrics that don't correlate with client satisfaction, but we will incentivize based on whether we can save $500 on a ticket, were able to get a no-show hotel room [fee] waived or could provide an upgrade. Clients appreciate that our services and commitment are in line with their own needs.

Campbell: So the incentives are paid to individual agents?

Casto: It's all on a team basis. We have 15 corporate teams, and each tracks on a scale of 18-20 items: Were they able to find a lower fare than was
logo-the-beat-new.gif originally offered? Could they get an upgrade for someone unable to get one on their own? Were they able to promote someone into a higher-level loyaltylogo-the-beat-new.gif program status? Were we able to find a consortium rate? They are very specific and measurable items that have immediate need for travelers as well as the company. On a monthly basis, the first place team gets $150 per person. The second-place team gets $75 per person. We started it about eight months ago, and you don't see the same people winning but you do see the consistent volume increasing in the amount of savings.

Luxury Stays in Your Client's Backyardtravel_trade.gif

March 21, 2008

Travel agents can benefit from the growing weekend travel trend. Though older travelers still take longer trips, younger travelers find they rarely have the time for long trips and, instead, turn to more frequent long weekends. In addition, many weekend travelers tend to be more affluent and are unwilling to trade down, just because their trips are shorter.

"Clients are not cutting back on expense or experience just because it is a long weekend trip and not one or two weeks long," said Suzette Covell, director of the vacation division of San Francisco-based Casto Travel, Inc. Covell told Travel Trade her agency is seeing an increase in younger, affluent clients taking short getaways since they have difficulty getting away from work. Read more...
