Celebrate the New Year on the Mendocino Coast
Author: Suzette CovellNo cell service. Isn’t that enough to make you want to go up to the North Coast for a long weekend? It is for me. We stay just north of Mendocino in South Casper every New Years weekend. No cell service, no internet, no TV. We bring good wine, cook crab ciopinno, play board games and watch the ocean drift past the large picture window. This is therapy for the soul and I can’t think of a more perfect way to start the new year. For those of you who need a more active getaway, consider taking a walk or a run out to the Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse, or visit the two neighboring towns, Fort Bragg and Mendocino, for site seeing, shopping and dining. Mendocino looks like it jumped right out of a beautiful movie, (in fact I think it did!) and Fort Bragg has a little bit of everything you would need. I recommend The Sweetwater Spa for a nice massage and definitely stop by the Wine Shop in Mendocino. The owner is happy to lend you some nice Reidel glasses if you are a customer and your abode lacks the necessary glass ware. Visit Glass Beach to collect old pieces of colored glass, or Jug Handle, which is in a well protected cove and features a 2.5 mile self-guided nature trail. I wish I could recommend lots of restaurants, but the truth is we light the wood burning stove and hunker down to enjoy home-cooked meals. I do love visiting what locals call the Tap Room for wonderful fish and chips and beer tasting. If you are traveling in to the Bay Area, consider adding a few extra days to your trip, and if you are local, you are only a half day drive from this beautiful area of the California coast.
