Glamorous and Exciting - Monte Carlo
Author: Joanne Norman
I recenlty traveled to Monte Carlo prior to joining a Silversea Cruise. Before departing the US, I bought the LeClub Diamant Rouge Travel Club Card. (your travel consultant can purchase the card for your). Le Club Diamant Rouge de Monaco, is the luxury travel club of the Monaco Government Tourist Office. Exclusive in benefits, yet affordable in price ($55), Le Club is the best way to take advantage of all the Principality has to offer. The “Card” gave us the opportunity to enjoy complimentary entrance to several museums as well as a complimentary helicopter transfer from the Nice airport to Monoco. The Heli Air Monoco desk is well located right outside of the customs area. The ride only took 7 minutes ( better than the 45 minutes- 1hour drive).
The helicopter ride and the specatcular view proved to be an experience of a liftetime!! After arriving in Monoco we were driven to the Fairmont Hotel via a complimentary shuttle. LeClub Card offers complimentary admission tickets to various museums in Monoco. We enjoyed a self guided tour of the Place du Palais where Princess Grace and Prince Rainier welcomed their guest to gala events. The Museum of Napoleonic Souvenirs was fascinating with a rich collection of more than a thousand objects and documents relating to the First Empire, we especially enjoyed seeing the hat that Emperor Napoleon I owned and perhaps wore in one of his battles. The Museum of Automation and Dolls of Yesteryear was fascinating as well as the Naval Museum with it superb collection of some 250 scale models of famous sea vessels. We also visited the Prince of Monaco’s Private Collection of Classic Cars consisting of over 100 vintage and veteran motorcars made by some of Europe’s most prestigious firms was a delight. We were only in Monoco for 2 full days, but had to opportunity to experience many wonderful sights because of our LeClub Travel Card .
The Fairmont Hotel (previously the Loews) has been recently renovated and the rooms are pleasant and well appointed. The hotel is one of the largest hotels in Europe with its 612 rooms. It has a contemporary feeling rather than traditional. It is often used for conferences and conventions, but this should not deter anyone from staying here. There is a Casino in the hotel as well a Spa. The outdoor heated pool on the rooftop commands one of the best views in Monoco. I would recommend to book a room with a view and balcony, even though the inner courtyard rooms are less expensive. Since the rooms are not very large, a room with a view and a balcony gives you a sense of additional space. Le Pistou Restaurant located on the top of the hotel with views of the Mediterranean Sea is wonderful for breakfast, lunch or a romantic dinner. We were lucky to be in Monte Carlo on a Friday night when a specatcular fireworks show was being presented. We reserved a table at LePistou Restaurant and enoyed a great meal accompanied by spectacular fireworks exploding overhead. The Bar on the Lobby level has an incredible view of the Medetteraen and is one of the “hottest” bars in Monoco. L’Argentin Restaurant, an elegant restaurant located on the lobby level also has stunning views of the sea and specializes in meats.
Monte Carlo in the evening is magical. There are numerous restaurants and late night entertainment. We enjoyed dining outside and watching the Rolls Royces’, Mazeratti’s, Ferrari’s, and Bentley’s arrive with the women flaunting their jewels . As we sipped our champagne and enjoyed local mussels we fantasized about “Life in Monte Carlo”.
Suggested sighseeing trips: Half-day to Eze-Village offering an amazing view over the peninsula. Full day trips to: the quaint village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence;a visit to the Picasso Museum in Antibes , and a visit to the Renoir Museum in Haut de Cagne.
